\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Have you ever tried Ethiopian food? \u00a0I hadn’t until recently. \u00a0Do you know anything about it?\u00a0\u00a0I just moved to Fullerton near several Ethiopian restaurants. \u00a0Curious about them, I researched ‘local Ethiopian food’ to learn which is best.\u00a0 Since those closest (Tana<\/a>, Abyssinia<\/a> & Merhaba<\/a>) had good reviews on Yelp, I became less clear where to go, thus I tried and compared them all myself, along with my adventurous husband – One Vegetarian Combination Plate<\/strong> at a time, served on Injera<\/strong>, a sourdough-risen flatbread with a slightly spongy texture.<\/p>\n

\"Tana<\/a><\/p>\n

We started our Local Ethiopian Food Tour’ at Tana Ethiopian Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> (above) on La Palma Avenue in Anaheim.\u00a0 It’s located in a small strip mall and doesn’t look like much on the outside, but inside it’s\u00a0relaxed and smells like something good is cooking.\u00a0 Don’t be timid to go inside, everyone’s nice — A common theme of all three.\u00a0 There’s\u00a0a better world inside each.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

We\u00a0had a Vegetarian Combination Plate<\/strong> at\u00a0each\u00a0restaurant — It’s\u00a0a varied combination of Shiro Wot, Kik Alicha, Gommen, Yemiser Wot, Sinegkarya, Lentil Stew, Potato & Carrot Wot, etc., which\u00a0generally translates into Cabbage, Spinach, Potatoes, Carrots, Lentils, Split Peas,\u00a0Green Beans and\/or Chard\u00a0cooked with Onions, Garlic, Ginger, Chili Powder,\u00a0Turmeric and other spices.\u00a0\u00a0A Wot\u00a0is a thick stew of different vegetarian and non-vegetarian types.<\/p>\n

\"Tana<\/a><\/p>\n

Inside Tana<\/a> (above) — Toasting with African Beer.\u00a0\u00a0Beer & Wine is served at all three.<\/p>\n

\"African<\/a><\/p>\n

No utensils are provided — You eat with your hands using the Injera.\u00a0 It appears most meals are served on it and more is provided on the side.\u00a0 We didn’t take\u00a0lessons on how to eat.\u00a0\u00a0We just tore-off a piece of Injera, pinched a little Wot and ate it.\u00a0 It worked well and made us full.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

The Injera can be\u00a0quite\u00a0filling —\u00a0Towards the end, I wanted a fork to eat less of it.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Abyssinia Ethiopian Cuisine<\/strong><\/a> (below) is the second\u00a0Ethiopian restaurant we tried in Anaheim, California\u00a0—\u00a0It’s located off West Lincoln Avenue and it too is unfancy on the outside and welcoming inside.\u00a0 Its Vegetarian Combination Plate also offered ten unique\u00a0dishes.<\/p>\n

\"Abyssinia<\/a><\/p>\n

Both Vegetarian Combination Plates thus far had similar dishes with\u00a0a Salad.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Except for the\u00a0Salad, most dishes are served warm, though\u00a0above\u00a0had\u00a0additional cold dishes.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Inside Abyssinia Ethiopian Cuisine (above) —\u00a0Toasting with Honey Wine & African Beer.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

We also tried their Doro Wot aka<\/em> Doro Wat\u00a0– A Spicy Chicken Stew made with Chicken Legs and Hard Boiled Eggs.\u00a0 The Sauce was flavorful and the Chicken was tender, but there wasn’t enough of it —\u00a0Abyssinia’s<\/a> Vegetarian Combo was more filling than their Doro Wot.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

And finally, we tried Merhaba East African Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> (below), last on this tour, but certainly not least.\u00a0 Consistent with the others, its exterior isn’t pretty, especially\u00a0sandwiched between an Emergency Walk-In Center and a Thrift Store, but there’s a friendly escape inside.<\/p>\n

\"Merhaba<\/a><\/p>\n

As shown, Merhaba’s<\/a> Vegetarian Combination Plate (below) has\u00a0six dishes and no\u00a0Salad.\u00a0 It includes fewer dishes than\u00a0Tana’s<\/a> and Abyssinia’s<\/a> Combos, but we both<\/span> liked Merhaba’s plate the best.\u00a0 Each dish had an abundance of flavor.\u00a0 It’s quality, not quantity at Merhaba.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

It’s funny… I was least excited to go to Merhaba<\/strong>, mostly because it has less of a presence online, but it may now be my first pick.\u00a0 It’s similarly comfortable inside too (below).<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Cheers to Merhaba<\/a> with a different\u00a0African Beer.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian<\/a><\/p>\n

Next time we’ll\u00a0try their special Coffee (below), which is\u00a0served after a ceremonial process.<\/p>\n

\"Ethiopian\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, Tana Ethiopian Restaurant<\/a>, Abyssinia Ethiopian Cuisine<\/a> and Merhaba East African Restaurant<\/a> are\u00a0indeed good and worth a visit\u00a0and more.\u00a0 All should definitely try Ethiopian food.\u00a0\u00a0Contrary to what some\u00a0think, Ethiopian food is filling and appetizing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
