IHOP’s Seventh Annual National Pancake Day will be happening on Tuesday, February 28th.  All day long, IHOP restaurants will be serving each guest a FREE Short Stack of Buttermilk Pancakes hoping they’ll donate what they would have paid, or more, to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities.  This year, the restaurant chain aims to raise $2.7 million, their most ambitious goal to date.  Mark your calendar to consume and contribute.

Note: In my own International Apartment of Pancakes, a Dutch Baby (pictured) was created.

Interesting Offer, But Already Up In The Air And Set To Land.

Do you “want to be part of the NYE Midnight Drop” they asked me?  Two seats on the pictured Super Shot are up for grabs, if I want them.  Part of me thinks it would be a fun way to start the new year, and the other part thinks, no thanks!  I appreciate the offer, but already up in the air in circumstance — That aside, 22/1 are the current odds of winning (2) Tickets to the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block PartyEnter here now.  Winner to be drawn Christmas Day.

Do We Have To Get In Line At 4:20 For A FREE Biscuit?

November 15th, 2011 No comments

We Wake And Bake Every Morning — Hhhmmmm, sounds a bit suspicious.  Pushing the envelope again I see, wink wink.  It’s sex, drugs and rock and roll in advertising.  How about some rock and roll, without a cow?  Okay, for now a FREE Biscuit will do.  Thanks Carl’s.

Line up Wednesday morning, November 16th for a FREE Hardee’s Made From Scratch Sausage Biscuit at Carl’s Jr.  During breakfast hours, walk into a Carl’s Jr. and ask for YOUR Biscuit.  No purchase necessary — Eat in or walk out, it’s all yours.  So, how many Carl’s can you hit in the morning?  Puddy says just ask the 8-Ball. ;)

Go-Go To Cost Plus World Market: Can’t Stop The World.

July 18th, 2011 No comments

Cost Plus World Market is a terrific place to find unique food items.  We’ve previously reported about a few of them.  What would you buy with a $2,000 Gift Card?  YOU could win it and a trip to the Greek Theatre to see the Go-Go’s with (10) of your best friends.  Please choose ME or YOU.  I’d pick up several bottles of Champagne at Cost Plus and we’d be Beauty and the Beat on the way to the Greek.  Enter before July 23, 2011.  Good luck!

Quick Tender Oven Baked Baby Back Ribs & A Preparation Experiment.

April 12th, 2011 No comments

Have you tried Houston’s BBQ Pork Ribs aka Knife & Fork Ribs?  They’re some of the best I’ve had and a model for how I want my Baby Back Ribs to be.  And I’m content knowing I’ve previously accomplished it, BUT sometimes there’s not the time, nor grill, then what?

The above Baby Back Ribs were baked in the oven at 400° for 1 hour wrapped in foil (fat/meat side down), then unwrapped, turned over and lathered with BBQ Sauce and cooked 20 – 30 minutes longer unwrapped.  Below is how they looked, prior to turning to sauce.

And separately below we experimented with a Dry Rub on a different slab of Baby Back Ribs.

Last year at the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival in San Francisco, I was given a Brown Sugar Pork Rub developed by Tyler Florence.  I finally tried it on this second slab of Ribs.  And to compound the test, we cooked them as described above, but at 225° for 3 hours.

The consensus, the slower cooked Dry Rub Baby Back Ribs fell apart while cutting, not attractive for serving, and unnecessary since the top Ribs cooked in half the time and were perfectly tender.  That recipe is from Delicious House.  It’s a keeper happily collected, posted and linked here for future use.

And I’m sorry to report that I wasn’t excited by Tyler’s Brown Sugar Pork Rub, and it sounded so good too, but Salt and Pepper worked better on the first slab of Baby Backs, a winner.

Cheez-It Wants You To Choose The Cheese: Which Do You Like Best?

March 14th, 2011 No comments

Cheez-It wants YOU to choose the next Cheez-It flavor.  They recently introduced Baby Swiss and are now looking to add another flavor – Asiago, Colby or Romano.  Which sounds best to you?  We’re still unsure.  Six of us tried ‘em all, but couldn’t agree.  Our votes were split between all three.  That’s not very helpful to Kelloggs, but we enjoyed eating them all.

You may still be able to obtain free samples to try the same.  Here’s the link.  Voting ends March 31, 2011.  If you already know which Cheez-It to vote for, you may vote here now.

Pinkberry Swirly Gram: A Different Idea For Valentine’s Day At The Office.

February 8th, 2011 No comments

I like that Pinkberry is always coming up with something new — Right now they’re making hearts swirl by introducing the Pinkberry Swirly Gram.  It’s a unique Valentine’s Day Treat that’s delivered.  You can send one now through Valentine’s Day.  Learn how to here.

Pre-Valentine’s Day I happily received a Cupid’s Swirl with a Swirly Spree, respectively translated, a Chocolate Frozen Yogurt with Brownie Bites, Raspberries and Shaved Milk Chocolate, and a gift-wrapped Pinkberry Gift Card – All was hand delivered to my office with balloons and a smile.

Didn’t get a photo of Cupid’s Swirl before melting, but you can tell it’s good.  Senders choose from 3 flavors – Chocolate as described, or Blood Orange Yogurt with Blood Orange Pieces and Waffle Cookies, or PB’s Original Yogurt with Toasted Almonds, Strawberries and Dark Chocolate Crisps.  All combinations sound perfect to me.  I have to try the Blood Orange.

Thank you Pinkberry — I only inhaled the helium from one balloon.

Three who shared in the delivery experience and consumption agreed the Yogurt and toppings were excellent and it was a fun distraction at the office.  Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday.

The day looked brighter as I went back to my office.

I sent the Swirly Spree to a nostalgic friend who reported to like Pinkberry this very day.  Good timing for him – It went to a good home.  Enjoy!  We sure did.  See earlier reports here.

Crepes Bonaparte (And Others) To Be At The New Year’s Eve Block Party.

December 27th, 2010 No comments

Crepes Bonaparte and about 50 other Gourmet Food Trucks will be at the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party.  We had the pleasure of trying their food at the Preview Event and what a treat it was.  All was fresh tasting, sizeable and high in quality.  Merci CB!

Check out their MENU and good prices too.

For our savory Crepe, we tried the Baby Bleu.

As you can see below, folded into the Baby Bleu is a generous amount of Chicken, Bleu Cheese, fresh Spinach and a Raspberry Vinaigrette – The combination goes well together.  Unfolded it’s not as glamorous, but you’re able to see the quality of its ingredients.

And for our sweet Crepe we tried the HazelBerryAna with a side of Ice Cream — It consists of fresh Strawberries, Bananas and Nutella, a Hazelnut spread that seems to be all the rage these days, all rolled up (or triangle folded) into a large tasty Crepe.

Two of us shared both, but still couldn’t finish it all, especially since we had to save room for more truck meals.  It was a lot of food that I’d like to have right now.

I don’t know his story, but this fun DJ will be playing tunes at the New Year’s Eve Block Party too.  If the Preview Event is an indication of his talent, we’re in for good music on NYE.

If you’ve heard of Crepes Bonaparte before, but aren’t quite sure where, it could be that you remember them from the Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race” — They were one of seven truck teams competing for a $50,000 grand prize.  They were eliminated from the competition in week three and now truck proudly around Orange County.  Lucky OC.

Several other food trucks were serving up deliciousness at the Preview Event and I luckily spun the wheel to receive a sampling from Rolling Sushi.  And toys were being collected to receive $5 off the price of admission to the OC Fair’s NYE Block Party.

Although not in the mood for Sushi this night, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the pieces we received — And my guest who is afraid of Sushi even liked ‘em.

I unfortunately cannot recall the exact names of the pictured items, but Rolling Sushi’s menu is linked here.  They’ll be present at the NYE Block Party too, thus you’ll be able to try all then.  And their impressive service is worth mentioning too – They were so nice.

Tickets are still available for the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party, so if you want to try Crepes Bonaparte, Rolling Sushi and several other popular Gourmet Food Trucks, buy your ticket today.  And why not go all out with a VIP ticket – It comes with a few extra perks.

And finally, 12 lucky winners will have a chance to welcome in the New Year with a blast by free-falling at the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party at midnight.  In other words, twelve coveted spots are being offered for a special midnight “drop” on the Super Shot Free Fall Ride.  Interested riders can enter online at ocfair.com/giveaway and enter the code “countdown.”  Winners will be selected on December 30th and must already have a ticket to the event.  Good luck.

I hope to see you there — Happy New Year!

OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party & Preview Event: Win NYE OC Tickets.

December 6th, 2010 10 comments

Mark your calendar — If local, you’ve got to check out the New Year’s Eve Block Party Preview Event.  It’s scheduled for Thursday, December 16, 2010, from 6 – 9pm at the OC Fair & Event Center, near the Pacific Amphitheatre Box Office.  It’s FREE to get in (and park).  The special preview event will feature music, karaoke and a sampling of gourmet food trucks participating in the New Year’s Eve Block Party event on December 31, 2010.  Food and beverage tastings will be offered for a small fee, varied by truck.  You just need to show up, park, walk up, then decide what to try first and bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the special toy drive to receive $5 off a ticket to the New Year’s Eve Block Party.

Pictured here is a sampling from just one of the 50+ food trucks to be present at the New Year’s Eve Block Party.  The colorful French Toast (above) and Beef, Lamb & Chicken Skewers (below) will be served by Chomp Chomp Nation, one of the newer trucks on the road that’s operated by a proud husband and wife team.

You’ll be able to enjoy the pictured items (and so much more) at the OC Fairgrounds on New Year’s Eve and stop by the Preview Event happening Thursday, December 16th to check out other gourmet food truck options.  You’re sure to find something you’ll love!

And if you like what you see at the FREE Preview Event, why not ring in the new year at the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party?!  There will be a lot going on.  Bring the family, friends, or come alone, as there will be plenty to do, EAT and see.  In addition to the 50+ gourmet food trucks, tribute bands will be playing throughout the evening (Pearl Jam, U2, Oingo Boingo, Led Zeppelin, The Smiths, The Rolling Stones, just to name a few), and there will be dancing, a demolition derby, a comedy hypnotist and a pyrotechnic laser show at midnight, and possibly a few rides – It’s almost the Orange County Fair in December.

PLEASE NOTE – The OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party will be different than past NYE events held at the venue, in that it’ll be hosted by the OC Fair & Event Center, not a private promoter seeking all hoochies.  It strives to be family friendly and fun, like a real block party.  Tickets are on sale now.

ATTENTION — If local, the above tickets can be yours.  We’re giving them away on December 20th.  Just leave a comment here or send a direct message to FoodBlog on Twitter NOW and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win them.  And if you reeeeeeaallllllly want them, you may leave a comment or send a direct Twitter message once daily to improve your odds of winning.  Good luck all!

12/20/10 Update:  Congratulations goes to John Lombardo of Huntington Beach — His name was drawn from about (33) who entered to win tickets to the OC Fair New Year’s Eve Block Party by leaving a comment here, sending a Direct Message through Twitter and/or Facebook.  Thanks to all who entered.  I hope to see you at the event.

Thanks For Flashing Me Your Anatomically/Agriculturally Correct Drive.

December 1st, 2010 1 comment

Zespri, thanks for choosing me as a Semi-Finalist in your Kiwi A-Go-Go Bloggers’ Contest — I now live happily knowing that, and enjoy the use of this lovely anatomically correct GOLD Kiwifruit Flash Drive aka consolation prize.  If you don’t know, the gold KIWI differs in shape from the green in that it protrudes slightly at both ends, a fact I haven’t known for long.  Unfortunately I didn’t win the grand prize dream vacation for 4 to New Zealand, but do appreciate having a great shot.  It was fun to think about.

I still like playing The Kiwi Game, the new phenomenon sweeping the nation. ;)

Cookin’ Around An Open Fire And Dog Walking With Cheese Puffs.

November 14th, 2010 No comments

Been camping in South Carlsbad, but will soon post our final wrap up of the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival and back log of reports that’s ensued.  It’s all good.

Cooking Hot Dogs over the camp fire while the sun sets over South Carlsbad.

Relaxing.

Running through the Seagulls hoping for a few things not to happen.

Creative dog walking with a Cheese Puff and fishing pole — No hook. :)

Inspiring a lazy dog to walk.

It worked, but not for very long.

Wake up Maggie got it.

Painted rocks in South Carlsbad.  Nibbles of Tidbits left a special message on a rock — Find it and describe and we’ll send you a prize.  Good luck!

Another sunset on a mini vacation.
